DESIGN SOLUTION
Programming and design for a new 8,500 s.f. laboratory facility to house
specialized oceanographic research activities. The facility provides
landside support for analysis of samples and data gathered from sea cruises.
This laboratory building necessitated specialized spaces to ensure uniform environmental
control and cleanliness which would guarantee sample viability for the various spectroscopic,
organic geochemistry, and sedimentary geochemistry studies. Class 100 and Class 10000 clean
rooms with circulation control planned in a hierarchal manner, allow sample isolation as they
are processed from the ship's hold to lab bench. The corrosive nature of the coastal environment
and the materials being tested necessitated special attention to materials selection, HVAC design,
and equipment specifications.
A docking module is provided for a transportable lab which is used while at sea and then relocated to the lab
building when in port. Public access with viewing windows allows for educational tours which do not compromise
the ongoing research projects.
