DESIGN SOLUTION
Reconstruction to the formal entrance of this historic campus structure which serves as the
Administration Building and School of Nursing. The porch was rebuilt with a contemporary
understructure made of galvanized steel to provide lower maintenance over the long-term.
Historical detailing of the porch which was added after the building was constructed in
the late 1860's has been replicated.
A unique aspect of this reconstruction was that under the deteriorating wood porch was a telephone room housing
the University's primary campus telephone switch. Over the years the increased potential for damage due to
leaks of both roof and deck became a concern. A new concrete slab with a waterproof membrane was incorporated
into the design to protect the equipment from possible damage.
Because the telephone equipment could not be relocated during the reconstruction, special protective measures
had to be employed as the porch roof and deck were reconstructed over top of the equipment.
