DESIGN SOLUTION
To design new offices and training space for staff and program volunteers
to relieve the extremely small and overcrowded offices located near the campus.
Placed adjacent to the Athletic Complex at the University of Delaware, the facility
reinforces the 20 year relationship between the University and Special Olympics.
The design allows Delaware Special Olympics to establish their own identity while at the same time to be
harmonious with the much larger Field House. The vaulted canopy form emulating the Field House roof embraces
both existing and new. The backlit logo disc of Special Olympics along with the indirect lighting of the
canopy reinforce the location of the entry to the facility as well as help anchor this end of the Field House.
A security vestibule allows for independent classroom use of the training room by the University community
without disrupting the staff of DSO. Program offices face an enlarged corridor which doubles as a filing
area while providing work space for special projects requiring layout space. The color scheme throughout
the facility and furnishings are respective of DSO's graphic program.
